Federal University Wukari Hosts Successful "Hands-on Training On Recombinant DNA Technology"
The Directorate of Central Laboratory at the Federal University Wukari recently organized a five-day hands-on training on recombinant DNA technology to provide participants with practical skills in various areas related to the field.
The training, which was held from the 8th to the 12th of May 2023, attracted participants from various parts of Nigeria (ranging from Usman Danfodio University; Sokoto, University of Jos; Plateau state, Benue State to mention just a few) who sought to gain knowledge and improve their skills in the field of biotechnology and DNA technology. The training was facilitated by Emmanuel Amlabu, Ph.D., an experienced instructor from prince Abubakar Audu University Anyigba who is an expert in recombinant DNA technology with landmark achievements and awards in the field.
Participants in the training acquired knowledge and practical skills in several areas of DNA technology, including DNA extraction, PCR cocktail preparation, agarose gel electrophoresis, gel extraction, digestion of plasmids, digestion of PCR amplicon, cloning, and bioinformatics. The training was focused on equipping participants with practical skills that can be applied in basic and applied research in Nigeria.
The Director of Central Laboratory, Federal University Wukari, Ojochenemi E. Yakubu, Ph.D., noted that the training was aimed at empowering researchers and students in Nigeria to make significant contributions to the field of biotechnology and DNA technology. He further remarked that the training was designed to provide participants with practical skills and hands-on experience in the latest techniques and technologies related to recombinant DNA technology.
The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Yohanna Samaila A., also expressed his satisfaction with the training, noting that the participants were enthusiastic and motivated to learn and acquire new skills. He further highlighted that the training enabled participants to understand the fundamental principles of DNA extraction, PCR cocktail preparation, agarose gel electrophoresis, gel extraction, digestion of plasmids, digestion of PCR amplicon, cloning, and bioinformatics.
In conclusion, the hands-on training on recombinant DNA technology organized by the Directorate of Central Laboratory, Federal University Wukari, was a resounding success. The instructors were highly experienced and knowledgeable, and the participants acquired practical skills that they can apply in their research work. It is hoped that more training events like this will be held in the future to equip researchers and students in Nigeria with the requisite knowledge and skills to make significant contributions to the field of biotechnology and DNA technology.
